REFEREE TOOLS – NOVEMBER 2026 NEWSLETTER #15: Talk Like a Team: Mastering Referee Intercom Communication

Hi Referees,

An intercom only helps if your crew uses it well. Used badly, it becomes noise in your ear at the worst moment. Used well, it lets the referee, assistants and fourth official work as one team, with faster, calmer, more accurate decisions.

This month: how to set up, what to say, what not to say, and how to look after your system all season.

1. WHY INTERCOM MATTERS

- Assistants can share what the referee cannot see: off-the-ball incidents, shirt numbers, offside detail.

- Less flag-and-wait means quicker restarts and better match flow.

- The crew can agree a decision quietly instead of a public conference.

- Hands-free talk lets you keep running, positioning and watching play.

2. PRE-MATCH SETUP CHECKLIST

- Fully charge every unit the night before. Pack a power bank and cable.

- Pair the whole crew as one group in the dressing room, not on the pitch.

- Do a radio check at the warm-up: each official says their role, and the others confirm.

- Test at distance. Walk to the corner flags and check the audio is still clear.

- Set volume so you hear the crew over crowd noise, but can still hear players.

- Secure the unit and cable so they don't move when you sprint.

3. KEEP IT SHORT: AGREE YOUR CALL WORDS

Good intercom talk is short, calm and consistent. Agree a few key words with your crew before kick-off:

"Check, check"                   – Hold the restart, I have information

"Offside, offside"               – I'm flagging, support my decision

"Play on, play on"               – Nothing there, keep going

"Penalty, inside" / "Outside"    – Location of a foul near the box line

"Yellow / Red, number 8, blue"   – Recommended sanction, player and team

"Last 5"                         – Time check from the fourth official

The rule: the person with the information speaks; the referee decides. Say the key word twice, give one fact, then go quiet.

4. WHAT NOT TO SAY

- No running commentary. Silence is normal and good.

- No opinions on players or coaches. Assume someone may hear you.

- Don't talk over the referee when they are managing a player face-to-face.

- Don't argue a decision live. Discuss it at half-time.

5. CREW ROLES ON THE CHANNEL

- Referee: leads the channel and confirms decisions with a short "Got it."

- Assistants: offside, ball out of play, incidents on their side, and anything behind the referee's back.

- Fourth official: substitutions, time, technical-area behaviour. Use mute when not speaking.

6. IF THE SIGNAL DROPS

Technology can fail, so always have a backup. Agree flag signals, eye contact and hand signals before the match, and switch straight back to them if audio cuts out. Never let a lost signal stop the game.

7. CARE AND BATTERY TIPS

- Wipe off sweat and rain after every match, and let units dry before charging.

- Recharge within a day or two of use. Don't store batteries completely empty.

- Store in a case, away from heat and direct sunlight.

- Check ear hooks, foam covers and cables monthly and replace worn parts.

LAW CORNER: The Laws of the Game allow match officials to use communication equipment, but each competition decides what is permitted. Check your league or association rules before using an intercom in an official match.
