Newsletter #6: February 2026 Focus, Fitness & Fair Play

💌 Welcome to the February Issue

February sits between early‑season rhythm and the busy spring period. It’s the perfect month to sharpen your decision‑making, tune your fitness, and upgrade the tools you rely on every match.

This issue focuses on: match control, communication with captains, pre‑season style fitness, and a Referee Wallet & Card Set spotlight you can feature on refereetools.com.

🧠 Game Management: “Only the Captain”

From 2025/26, competitions can implement “Only the captain” guidelines for player–referee communication.

What this means in practice:

  • You address the captain when managing persistent dissent or team behaviour.

  • Players are encouraged to communicate through the captain, not by surrounding you.

  • It helps lower pressure, improves respect, and keeps conversations structured.

How you can apply it now (even in leagues without formal adoption):

  • At the pre‑match briefing:
“If there’s an issue, I’ll speak to you as captain. Please help manage your team.”

  • During flashpoints:
“Captain, that’s enough dissent from your number 8. Help me calm it down.”

This small shift can transform how players approach you and reduce emotional confrontations.

💪 February Fitness Focus – Stay Match Ready

Even outside of official tests, referees should maintain structured training. Good pre‑season style habits can be reused mid‑season to prevent drop‑offs.

Suggested weekly plan (2–3 sessions):

  • Session 1 – Intervals on pitch

    • Warm‑up 10 minutes

    • 10–12 × 45 seconds fast run / 45 seconds walk

    • Cool‑down + stretching

  • Session 2 – Strength & Core (at home or gym)

    • Squats or lunges, plank variations, hip stability

    • 20–30 minutes focusing on legs and core to reduce injury risk

  • Session 3 – Match‑simulation run (optional)

    • 20–30 minutes of varied pace (walk–jog–sprint repeats)

    • Mimic the stop‑start pattern of an actual match

Key principles:

  • Start in time, don’t cram fitness before tests or tournaments.

  • Prioritise quality over quantity – 2–3 targeted sessions beat 5 random jogs.

  • Include core stability 3× per week to prevent injuries.

🏷 Product Spotlight – Referee Wallet & Card Set

Feature a clear hero product this month: your Referee Card Wallet / Card Set on refereetools.com.

A slim, professional referee wallet designed for fast, clean administration:

  • Bright, high‑contrast yellow and red cards

  • Sturdy, easy‑grip wallet that fits most shirt pockets

  • Space for match notes, team lists, and a small pencil

  • Ideal for youth, amateur, and semi‑pro referees

Why it matters:

  • Good card visibility helps players instantly understand decisions.

  • A well‑organised wallet lowers stress when recording goals, cards, and substitutions.

🎯 Decision‑Making & Positioning – Pre‑Spring Tune‑Up

Ahead of spring tournaments and tighter league fixtures, use February to refine:

1. Positioning on set plays

  • For corner kicks: start with a clear angle to see both the ball and key contact zones in the penalty area. Move dynamically as the ball is delivered rather than standing static. Guidance from elite programmes emphasises anticipating where the next challenge will occur, not just where the ball currently is.

2. Advantage vs immediate whistle

  • Use advantage only when the fouled team clearly benefits from continuing attack.

  • If the advantage doesn’t materialise within 2–3 seconds, bring play back to the original foul. This “wait and see” approach is reflected in training materials for advanced referees.

3. Off‑the‑ball awareness

  • When fitness improves, use that extra capacity to scan off the ball – potential holding, blocking, and simulation have become a stronger point of emphasis in top competitions.

❤️ February Theme – Respect & Relationships

With Valentine’s month as a light theme, you can add a short, human section:

“3 Relationships Every Referee Should Protect”

  1. With players – Be firm but respectful. Clear explanations (when time allows) build trust over a full season.

  2. With coaches – Short, calm pre‑match chats help set expectations and reduce sideline tension.

  3. With yourself – Recovery, sleep, and honest self‑review after games keep you improving rather than burning out.

At RefereeTools.com, our mission is to support all three – with gear you trust, education you can use, and a community you can belong to.

📚 Quick Law Reminder – 2025/26 Changes Still Matter

Many competitions are still settling into the 2025/26 Law changes, effective from mid‑2025:

  • Captains‑only communication option under Law 3 (team captain).

  • 8‑second goalkeeper holding rule with a restart as a corner kick in trials, not an indirect free kick in the penalty area.

  • Greater focus on simulation and holding offences, especially in the penalty area, with stronger action expected from officials.

📆 Simple February Referee Checklist

You can present a short, actionable list:

  • Review 2025/26 Law changes summary once this month.

  • Complete at least 8–10 focused fitness sessions in February.

  • Check whistle, wallet, flags and boots for wear or damage.

  • Re‑organise your kit bag (spare whistle, spare cards, extra pen).

  • Watch 1–2 high‑level matches focusing only on referee positioning.
